Excessive oil production can occur for a variety of reasons. It may be hereditary, owing to hormonal changes (puberty or pregnancy), or even seasonal changes, lifestyle, and climate. Inadequate diet, inept hair care, and a few sorts of medication may also influence how greasy the hair becomes.
There are things we do that cause the hair to become oily too. Over-washing or unnecessary scrubbing while shampooing can irritate the scalp which would cause more oil secretion. Once the natural hair oil is stripped off, the scalp kicks off excessive oil production. For this reason alone, it is not recommended to wash the hair more than once a day.
It is, nevertheless, important to rinse the hair with cold water for at least 30 seconds to ensure that the shampoo and conditioner runs clear. Hot water stimulates the sebaceous glands, whereas cold water helps shut them down. Cold water also helps close hair cuticles that helps in reducing damage to the hair.
